Hello Open Toolchain Friends and Family I think it time I also through in a short intro.

I’m currently working mainly around the Open Tech Ecosystem focussing on Hardware, have been there from the beginnings of the opentoolchain.org and now really excited that this finally ships out.

Apart from testing tools like FreeCAD and platforms like GitLab (and many others) for open source collaboration and just the fun of discovery I also have build workshops and machines myself, specialised in circular economy, documentation and open source hardware licensing (later one not my favourite domain though  ). I love to repair all kinds of devices and teach people how to do the same. Oh and I studied Mechanical Engineering plus Renewable Energies at some point with a strong hype for new possibilities for vertical axis wind turbines.

Coming up with new initiatives and projects to inspire people to do impact and future/sustainability oriented activities I’m also a co-founder of ose-germany.de (Open Source Ecology Germany e.V.) that is currently growing rapidly, me doing some PR, Community Management, Project management and funding over there. So a bright open source future ahead I would boldly state, I invite everybody to join the party soon. In the meantime you can also checkout my wiki profile for more info via:
En:Timm Wille – Open Source Ecology - Germany (will update at some point)

Cheers to everyone in here and beyond working on an open source ecosystem for engineering.

Hello Everyone,

My name is Jeremy. I am involved with open source CAD development and do some of my own open hardware development. Below are a few things I’m involved in.

  • Core CadQuery developer. CadQuery is a Python API for creating parametric CAD models.
  • Collaborating on OCCI with OTFN, Mark from Archiyou, and Dave (the creator of CadQuery). OCCI is an API for CAD data interchange. I’m responsible for the FreeCAD plugin that acts as a sample client.
  • Created Semblage, which is a CAD program with the goal of combining the ease-of-use of mouse-driven CAD with the power of programmatic CAD (you’ll often hear me use the term “CodeCAD”).
  • Have a company called 7B Industries which acts as an umbrella for my open hardware endeavors.
  • Several years ago, I was on the board for the Mach 30 Foundation for Space Development, and was a volunteer hardware developer (example project).

I also have a bachelors in mechanical engineering and over 20 years of experience writing software. I think the combination of those two things has driven my interest in CodeCAD.

I will be at the second day of the Fab City Hamburg event on March 4th, and then the OTFN hackathon on March 6th and 7th. If you’re going to be at either event (or both), please say hi if you see me. I’m looking forward to getting more connected with OTFN and the people involved in it.

Hi

i’m just a hobbyist who found out about OTFN on fosdem
i occasionally use KiCad, (best example of a success story in open source hardware tooling?)
and give the occasional intro workshop
i’ve attempted and failed at getting started with FreeCAD several times
(and have resorted to getting used to OpenSCAD while pining for my autocad on windows days)
i’m also looking forward to getting the CNC router running at the local hackerspace
and am looking at Kiri:Moto for that

i’m an avid Nix user and maintain the KiCad package in nixpkgs
(world’s largest, most up-to-date software package set)

right now i’m somewhat concerned about the state of the sigrok project
(open source software for using logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, multimeters, etc)
and am curious how the OTFN could help such a (leaderless) project

Hello to all the impressive people.
I’m Jason Selvarajan.I’m an environmental engineer, studying creative sustainability that leans more towards digital fabrication and art these days.I was part of the Fablab at Aalto University (Finland) until a few years back, now I’m a co-ordinator at a studio/workshop space, also at the university. I used to work on a clean teach water recirculating shower (I met Timm and some of his colleagues at POC21 Innovation Camp a long time ago) but closed up shop during corona and I’m currently looking for my next project… or then I’ll boot it up again after some rest.

As for tools I’m ok with Blender and will try to catch up with OpenSCAD and maybe brush up on my KiCAD, but I’m still a beginner with all of those so most likely can only contribute on an aesthetic level on those parts.

Building and testing hardware prototypes is maybe more my jam. Excited to meet ya’ll.

Hi crew… great to read about your talent and passion!

… myself, studied mechanical engineering for a while but wanted to go a bit more hands-on, so I’m working as a mechatronics technician now. Have been diving into FLOSS for two decades now and am firmly committed to pave the way for a cooperative open source everything econonmy. Also interested in sociocybernetics (steering / governance of society) and dreaming of open source educational XR.
Main project is the »Freie Software – Freies Wissen« https://Schulstick.org live-distro of which there’s also a “Makerstick” variant which should be a good demonstration platform for our open toolchain, as it already comes equipped with many of the tools from our open tool database.

So… to Openfinity and beyond! :fist::nerd_face: See you in HH…

Guten tag Leute!

My name is Christian Thams and I’ll be joining the “Future of Making” Conference on friday - saturday and the hackathon next week.

I am a Swedish/Canadian Industrial Designer and has been working with Open-Source projects at Bang & Olufsen (BeoCreate, https://beocreate.com/about-us ) and Danish Design Center on the EU-project Opennext where I helped develop open source business tools (DDC, Designing Your Open-Source Hardware Development Ecosystem ). I’ve also done quite a bit of ‘traditional’ design work, which I abandoned after visiting factories abroad, which to me was a horrendous experience.

My own personal goal with a open-source mindset, is to create peer reviewed products to serve the communities we’re part of instead of corporations. And to do that, you need to make enough money for media outlets to report on it. So I might be ‘the capitalist’ in the group, but as I see it, the research is there, the knowledge of our destruction of environment is there and the last step to ‘prove’ OS mindset is to offer open source developed products to normal consumers, like my mom.

I met both Martin Häuer and Tim Wille during my time at the DDC, who’ve invited me to join these quite amazing events in Hamburg. I’m really looking forward connecting with everyone and see if we can collectively make products/services that do good in this world while having minimal impact.

Currently I’m in Berlin (until Friday) and will be in Hamburg from Friday to Tuesday. My mail is hello@christianthams.com and WhatsApp is +45 2992 8268 if anyone wants to meet up in person beforehand

Hope y’all are doing great and see you soon!

Hi guys, I am Uwe. I am developing for the CAD software FreeCAD. There I am in the core developers team and act as release manager. Thanks to the OTFN I was recently able to increase the FEM capabilities of FreeCAD. (You can now perform electromagnetic analyses of modeled parts.)
I am a physicist and microsystems engineer. I worked in the machine building industry as a specialist for packages (food, medical devices etc.), now I am in the medical industry and develop and design microfluidics products and components. Due to the low amount of parts needed for microfluidics applications (every application needs its own design) the parts are 3D-printed. Moreover, many structures are only possible to manufacture using 3D-printing.
I started at a small company with less than 10 people and we could not afford expensive CAD and therefore I gave FreeCAD a try. Over the last 4 years there I tried to fix bugs and implemented features I needed in my daily work. So FreeCAD is for my work a major tool in the tool chain.
In the past I developed for many years for www.lyx.org, a frontend for LaTeX.

Unfortunately I cannot come personally to Hamburg but try to join online.

Hello everybody! I’m Morgan Allen coming out from sunny California.
I am a long tinkerer of all things tinkerable. I’ve spent much of my time as a web developer but also a programmer at large. Prior to COVID I had my dream job as an exhibit fabricator at Chabot Space and Science Center in Oakland, CA, USA. Here I got to work with education staff and volunteers to bring interactive exhibits to the public. Beyond just writing code, this allowed me to fabricate custom PCBs and and enclosure/cabinets, designed in KiCAD and FreeCAD.

In 2019 I gave a talk at KiCON about designing my 3D PCB badge, The Cacoffiny

I also have an interest in Mesh Networking and low power wireless networks with LoRa radios. I’ve designed and build several ESP32 based LoRa development boards, most recently the ESP32 LoRa Gateway. I will have a few of these boards with me.

I’ve recently left my job as a python developer to pursue wood working and CNC fabrication using the FreeCAD Path Workbench.

I’m super excited to be joining the hackathon in just a couple days now! Apologies this didn’t get put up earlier, I’ve had limited power and next to no internet in the days prior to travelling… I’ll be in Hamburg on Friday afternoon if anyone else is around, I’d love to tour any of the local spaces and possible use a soldering station to repair some badges?

Hi there!

My name is Andreas Kahler, I’m chairman and cofounder of FabLab München and I’m leading/working on a couple of open source hardware projects there (FabMX, [Laser4DIY].(http://laser4diy.org/), StereoNinja).
I also have many years of experience as a professional software developer, and am currently interested in using my expertise there to bring forward the toolchain for open hardware projects. Specifically, I’d like to build a workflow for mechanical CAD using code. I want command line tools, that take code, compiles that into 3d models, runs automated unit test, builds a BOM, creates an assembly manual, and all of that in an automated CI pipeline. I started converting our CAD models from FabMX, and maybe this is also a direction we could explore in the Hackthon.
I looking forward to meeting you all, discussing ideas and working on the tool chain.
Best
Andreas

Hi there!

My name is Laurent, I am 53 years old.
https://www.linkedin.com/in/laurent-trinques-b81baa84/

In my spare time, I have been the manager of the QElectroTech team for about 10 years now.
Little coding, help users and contributor, I package QElectroTech for Windows with MXE cross-compiler, Debian QET repository, Ubuntu PPA, AppImage, Flatpak, and also macOS.
I also take care of the maintenance of the website, forum, wiki, bugtracker, etc.

As a free software lover and self-taught, I have been using Debian for 20 years. Both at home and at work.

I work in the heavy industry as an electromechanical maintenance technician in staggered hours (5 X 8) 2 days in the morning, two days in the afternoon and two days at night, and finally 4 days off. It’s quite exhausting when you get older… and retirement starts to get closer.

I mainly do breakdown work, my job is to repair production lines as quickly as possible, we touch everything HV, LV, TBT, process, PLC, mechanics, industrial electricity, pneumatics, hydraulics, IT, etc.

Between breakdowns, I spend my time on various tasks, making machines reliable, wiring, retrofitting, reworking electrical diagrams with QElectroTech of course, etc.

Cheers,
Laurent
